On January 28, 2024 the Polish Center will be partnering with the Holocaust Education Resource Center (HERC) on Holocaust Remembrance Day. Professor Peter Staudenmaier from Marquette University will be giving a lecture on "Weimar Germany and the Rise of Nazism".

We usually think of the history of Nazi Germany and the Holocaust backwards, from its apocalyptic end in 1945. But to understand how something like the Holocaust became possible, we need to look at this history from its beginnings. The talk will examine the rise of Nazism during the Weimar period, before Hitler’s rule, and attempt to understand the fateful turns that German society took while there was still hope for democracy.

Peter Staudenmaier is Associate Professor of History, with a focus on modern Europe at Marquette University. His work centers on Nazi Germany, Fascist Italy, environmental history, and the history of racial thought.
